It was the first Alfonsina Montes song that I had heard and so I was very excited to be singing it with David Grimes when he recorded it 15 years ago. The song was written in 1939, but began to be sung by women in the depression years of the fifties, as they learned it merely the year before Silva y Lillo recorded this famous song for EMI. The song is now sung by millions of women everywhere who have walked into the sea and felt a sense of isolation.In this arrangement the song has been recorded for the harp with an optional piano accompaniment, and includes the famous «click« found in many slower paced Argentine songs. Each recording is an interpretation, each listener finding this song his or her own. As every great song is, it evolves, and in fact Alfonsina y el mar is no exception.
